Why I’m Convicted to Mill My Own Flour (And Why You Might Be Too)

If you had asked me a few years ago what kind of flour I used, I probably would have shrugged and said, “whatever’s on sale as long as it's not bleached.” I had no idea that what I was feeding my family was stripped of its God-given nutrients and vitality.
But now? I’m convicted—deeply—that we were never meant to eat dead flour.
And I’m not saying that to sound dramatic. I’m saying it because I’ve seen the research, I’ve read scripture, and I’ve started paying attention to the health crisis we’re in… and how much of it connects back to what we eat—especially what we eat daily.
What’s Wrong With Store-Bought Flour?
Most flour you’ll find in stores is refined, bleached, processed, and stripped of nearly all nutrients. When wheat is milled for shelf life and mass production, the germ and bran—the parts packed with nutrients, healthy fats, and fiber—are removed.
Why? Because those natural oils can go rancid if not used quickly. So to prevent spoilage, they take out the life-giving parts of the grain.
What we’re left with is basically white powder that spikes blood sugar and leaves us nutritionally depleted.
Even “whole wheat” flours are often just white flour with some bran added back in—without the germ or its rich, essential nutrients.
A Biblical Perspective on Bread
In scripture, bread is sacred. It’s symbolic. It’s sustenance. Jesus calls Himself the Bread of Life. In the Old Testament, bread was part of offerings and miracles. It’s what God gave the Israelites through manna in the desert.
But it wasn’t Wonder Bread!
In those days the bread was freshly prepared, stone-ground, whole grain. Bread the way God intended.
However, the Egyptians and the kings sifted their flour and studies have been done on the mummies that show that they most commonly died from calcified arteries and common maladies included arthritis, tooth decay, infections, cancer, emphysema, tuberculosis, parasites, pneumonia and obesity.
Modern research is showing that following the same ordinances God gave His people to protect them from the diseases of the Egyptians would help protect us from disease today. A big part of God's ordinances emphasize eating bread and the bread of that day again was freshly milled. Only the kings and wealthy people ate the delicacies of fluffy pastries that comes from sifted flour, like the flour we see in the stores today. (Source: What the Bible Says About Healthy Living)
📖 Proverbs 31:14-15 says: “She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up while it is still night; she provides food for her family…”
There’s something holy about preparing bread with our own hands. About feeding our families intentionally. About taking the time to do it right.
What Happens When We Mill Flour at Home?
When you freshly mill your own wheat berries, you’re getting:
Whole grain nutrition (nothing stripped away)
More fiber + B vitamins
Naturally preserved oils that benefit brain and hormone health
Improved digestion
Deeper satiety and stable blood sugar
You’re also protecting your family from unnecessary additives, anti-caking agents, bleach, and questionable preservatives.
And let’s talk gut health—because so many chronic health issues, including eczema, acne, thyroid issues, and even depression are now being linked to poor gut microbiomes.
👉 Freshly milled grains feed your gut with prebiotic fiber and don’t come with the inflammatory baggage of overly processed flour.
The Timeline of Trouble: When Milling Changed, So Did Our Health
Around the turn of the 20th century, as steel rollers became common and flour was mass-produced and bleached, we saw a massive spike in chronic illnesses, including:
Heart disease
Type 2 diabetes
Obesity
Gut disorders
ADHD and behavioral issues
Coincidence? I don’t think so.
What we eat has shifted dramatically… but our bodies weren’t designed to process these fake foods.
Why This Matters To Me as a Mom
As a chemical engineer turned SAHM and wellness advocate, I’ve spent years trying to protect my family from toxic chemicals.
But I’ve come to realize that the food we eat daily matters just as much as the products we use.
And bread—flour—is one of the most commonly consumed foods in the American diet. If I can reclaim just one thing to make a massive impact on my family’s health… it’s this.
So I’m inviting you to come along for the ride. Let’s learn together. Let’s experiment together. Let’s rise together. (Pun very much intended.)
